"Tiles and Tastes" Culinary Group

The "Tiles and Tastes" Culinary Group is open to the community — a welcoming space for those who love the joy of cooking and the camaraderie of playing Chinese Mahjong.

We are proud to partner with the Mill Valley Recreation Center, with gatherings hosted in the beautiful Mill Valley Golf Clubhouse, where we meet monthly to share a delicious meal, celebrate community, and, of course, enjoy a few lively rounds at the Mahjong table.

Each gathering is led by a volunteer “Honors Chef”, who selects a cuisine and organizes a small team of five Culinary Group volunteers to plan the menu and prepare the meal. Guests contribute by bringing an appetizer that complements the chosen theme. Together, we create a family-style feast, share recipes, and then gather for Mahjong — because nothing pairs better with food than the clack of tiles!

Menus highlight seasonal ingredients, cultural traditions, and holiday celebrations. It’s a participatory cooking experience — a chance to practice your skills, learn from others, and discover new flavors while connecting over the timeless game of Mahjong.

Here's a sneak peek at our seasonal start of delicious discovery.  Each month brings a new theme, fresh flavors, and joyful connection around the Mahjong table.

How it Works

  • Who can attend: Open to General Public and Marin Mahjong Members.

  • Participation:

    • Everyone takes a turn, either as a chef or a volunteer, to join a cooking team once a season to help create the meal.

    • When you’re not cooking, simply bring an appetizer to share so we can all enjoy a variety of tastes together.

    • We’ll all pitch in for cleanup at the end — with everyone helping, it’s done in no time!

  • Leadership:  Every dinner has an "Honors Chef"— the player who sets the menu, inspires the cooking team, and makes sure everything from prep to cleanup is handled with ease. Think of them as the “East Wind” of the kitchen!

  • Reservations: Required, as seating is limited (40-60 seats). Registration link and details will be shared one month in advance of each event.

  • What to bring: Your own beverage, tableware and table covering, including dishes, utensils, glassware, linens, and takeaway containers.  If you have one, a Mahjong set for your group or to share with friends at the tables.   If not, let us know so that we can bring one for your group

  • Season: "Tiles & Tastes" debuts in January 2026, with monthly dinners and Social Play the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Cost

Dinner Reservations

$30/General Public, $20/Marin Mahjong members for each monthly dinner.
